What Are the Different Types of AC Capacitors?

Ac Capacitors store energy by separating charge carriers (electrons) in an electric field between two electrode plates. The amount of stored energy is a function of the material and the separation distance between the plates, as well as the temperature, shape and properties of the dielectric between them.

There are many types of capacitors used in AC systems, including those found in heating and cooling units. Some of these include:
Ceramic Capacitors
In contrast to film capacitors, ceramic capacitors use a solid dielectric made from a single type of ceramic. Because of their superior performance and safety, they are often preferred in critical applications.

Polymer Film Capacitors
These are non-polarized capacitors made from a plastic film that is wound in a cylindrical winding, with metal electrodes applied on one or both sides of the plastic film. They are available in a variety of case styles, and can be used for a wide range of applications, from cost-effective, low-voltage pulse loads to high-current surge ratings and radial lead applications.

Metallized Film Capacitors
The most common types of metallized film capacitors are rectangular metalized film and cylindrical film & foil capacitors. These have the lowest surge and peak currents and the highest dissipation factors, which make them ideal for RF suppression, as well as for pulse load applications. They also have self-healing characteristics. However, their maximum current carrying capability and pulse voltage are limited by their thin metallized electrodes.
